Brooklyn Conservatory of Music
BCM offers individual and group music lessons with a trained music therapist for children with special needs. Programs are semester-based; however, new families can register at any time and pay pro-rated tuition. In addition, there are music therapy workshops held monthly on a variety of topics.
Mark Morris Dance Group
Mark Morris Dance Group is committed to bringing the joy and benefits of dance and music to students with Special Needs. Class size is kept small to allow for a more intimate learning experience an optional parent participation. Their weekly classes are also accompanied by live music. They offer classes to students ages 4-6, and 11+.
Tech Kids Unlimited
Tech Kids Unlimited (TKU) is a technology-based educational organization, for kids ages 7 to 18 with special needs, which empowers and inspires the next generation of digital natives to learn, create, develop and share the tools of technology. TKU teaches technology to kids who learn differently.
Kaiser’s Room offers arts-based enrichment classes for individuals on the Autism spectrum and with other developmental delays. They offer classes and opportunities which integrate essential skills like communication, movement, language development, and ensemble building into fun and engaging activities. Participants learn to follow direction, build attention capacity, and improve social interaction in a loosely-structured, engaging atmosphere. Their team of educators, performers, and teaching artists help create connections through artistic expression in a safe and welcoming environment.
The Manhattan Behavioral Center
All children have different needs, respond to different stimuli, and learn in different ways. The Manhattan Behavioral Center offers individually tailored enrichment classes (art, music, dance, sports, etc). They offer 2:1 and 1:1 support to give all children with special needs the opportunity to participate in non-competitive, skill expanding and fun activities in a small group setting.
Ballet For All Kids
Ballet For All Kids is a unique program makes classical ballet and other dance styles accessible using The Schlachte Method – a certified curriculum developed to accommodate all learning styles, body types, and abilities.
At Ballet For All Kids, they know everybody has abilities that can be used as a springboard to learn new skills and enhance a personal sense of accomplishment. Unfortunately, many children cannot succeed in a traditional class setting and are thus excluded from the numbers benefits that dance classes offer. Their integral approach offers a less restrictive environment paired with individualized attention and support in order to help every student succeed.
After ten successful years in Los Angeles, BFAK has recently expanded to New York. BFAK currently holds classes in various locations across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Jersey City and offers a free trial class to all new students.
Arts RX at the 14th Street Y
This NYC-based organization hosts an after-school creative arts therapy playgroup for children with special needs from 3:30-6pm. A Saturday creative movement group is also available. By using different techniques, therapists integrate creative activities into a group setting to help participants develop social skills. At a maximum of 8 children per age group with a 2-to-1 teacher-student ratio, the playgroups offer a highly supported creative environment in a developmentally appropriate setting. All classes are held at the 14th Street Y.
Innovative Piano Inc. – Private Lessons
IPI is the leader in ABA style piano education. The core goal is to provide effective piano instruction to individuals with developmental disabilities. To help families and our teachers accomplish this goal, ‘The Young Method’ series of piano instruction is used. These materials use basic, ABA style teaching techniques such as shaping, positive reinforcement and the systematic fading of prompts.
Music for Autism
Music for Autism is enhancing quality of life and raising public awareness through autism-friendly, interactive concerts developed specifically for individuals with autism and their families. The concerts, held in the United States and the United Kingdom, feature professional musicians, including Tony Award winners, Grammy-nominated classical artists, and Pulitzer Prize winners.
The program provides a special opportunity for families to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment. The auditoriums dedicated to the program have their lights up, the sound turned down and audience members are invited to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing! Program is offered to many locations nationwide.
Marlene Mayerson (JCC)
The Jack and Shirley Silver Center for Special Needs builds and nurtures an inclusive and accepting community where individuals with varying special needs and their families can participate and succeed in innovative social, recreational, and educational activities. Designed with a high staff-to-child ratio in a caring and supportive environment, their programs provide children with rich and engaging experiences.
Strokes of Genius
Strokes of Genius strives to further expand opportunities for individuals with autism who have a “love” for creating art by providing a vehicle for them to be able to express themselves. SOG provides a professional studio space in an inclusionary, mainstream, professional artist setting for beginning, emerging and established artists.
Bringing You Broadway
Bringing You Broadway is a non-profit organization that develops live interactive performances for individuals with Autism and other disabilities. Each month, they create tailor-made performances for different organizations, introducing individuals to musical theater, and promoting social interaction and the arts.
Only Make Believe
Only Make Believe is a non-profit organization that provides interactive theatre experiences for individuals in special education programs, hospitals, and care facilities. Teaching artists lead narrated activities that involve the entire audience and is highly individualized based on students stregnths and needs.
